Our Bishop Cyprian Monis of Asansol celebrated his Episcopal Silver Jubilee at Infant Jesus Pilgrim Church, Makrmapur, Bolpur. During the thanksgiving Eucharistic Celebration on August 7, 2019 more than 2000 laity, about 100 Religious Sisters, 100 priests and seven bishops joined him to thank the Almighty God.
The Asansol Priests organized the jubilee meaningfully. Fr. Anthony Raj, Parish Priest of Bolpur along with the religious Sisters and parishioners organized the liturgy solemnly. Some of the relative of Bishop Monis also joined the celebration from Mumbai. A number of priests from neighboruing dioceses also joined the celebration. Fr. IP Sarto gave a history of the pastoral ministry of Bishop Monis. Bishop Julius Marandi of Dumka preached a meaningful homily during the Mass highlighting the qualities of Bishop Monis.
At the end of the Liturgy a cultural program was staged to felicitate him. A book on Jesus Christ and Gandhiji in Bengali written by Mr. Apurbo Kumar Haldar from Krishnagar was released during the program.
Bishop Monis was born on April 11, 1945 to devout parents Late Sebastian Monis and Late Mary Antoinette in Saklespur parish of Chikmangalore diocese. Later the family moved to Dornahalli parish which has A Shrine of St. Anthony in Mysore diocese. He did his Primary schooling at Dornahalli Primary school. When he was in Class VIII Sr. Ananciata, BS spoke to him about priesthood and encouraged him to join the Seminary.
While doing PUC, the young man Cyprian spoke to the Parish priest expressing his desire to be a priest. He suggested him to go to Calcutta as Archbishop Albert was looking for Seminarians. Thus he joined Calcutta Archdiocese.
Then he was sent to St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore for Juniorate. In 1968 came to Morning Star College, Barrackpore for Philosophy and then for theology.
After his ordination on Dec. 21, 1975, he was posted at Kamarachowki to assist Fr. John Decooq, SJ. After a year he was made the first Parish priest of Kamarchowki. He was very much involved in Evangelization in Midnapore district.
In 1984 he was transferred to Burdwan as Parish priest. He continued his evangelization ministry and brought many people to faith. Thus he could be called an active Santhal Missionary. He was transferred to Morning Star Seminary as Minister from 1990 to 1992.During that time he worked among the Bengali speaking people in Guma and Bamandanga parishes.
His priestly life influenced four of his own nephews to join the priesthood and three nieces for Religious life.
In 1992 he was made Episcopal Vicar for Santhals in Burdwan. In 1994 he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Calcutta. His Episcopal ordination was on Aug 4, 1994 at St. Xavier’s School grounds, Burdwan. On March 12, 1998 he was installed as the First Bishop of Asansol at Sacred Heart Church, Asansol.
During the last 25 years he ordained 96 priests and 106 deacons.
